Which Paper Pot Size is Right for You?
We want to make sure you get the perfect fit for your setup. We currently offer two different sizes of Paper Pots based on the trays you’re using:
- 55 Cell Paper Pots (10x20"): These are made specifically for the Standard 1020 tray, which is what you’ll find in most local garden centers in North America.
- 50 Cell Paper Pots (12x24"): These are designed for non-standard 12x24" trays.
A Little Backstory
We first discovered these Paper Pots through the Japanese manufacturer, Nitten, who at the time only made them in the 12x24" size for home gardeners. We loved them so much that we spent this past year working with them to create the brand-new 10x20" version. Now, we can exclusively offer a size that fits the standard 1020 trays most of us here in North America already have in our potting sheds!
Starting from Scratch?
If you're new to this, don't worry, it’s simpler than it looks. Here is the basic gear we recommend to get your garden off to a great start:
- 55 Cell Paper Pots (10x20"): Our most popular size for home gardeners.
- Opening Clips: You only need one set! They hold the pots open while you fill them.
- 1020 Propagation Tray with Drain Holes: This holds your pots and lets extra water escape.
- 1020 Propagation Tray Without Drain Holes: Use this underneath the first tray to catch drainage.
A few extra helpful items:
- Mesto Sprayer: Gives a gentle mist that won't disturb your seeds.
- Seed Starter Soil: A lightweight mix that makes it easy for new roots to grow.
Returning Customers: What to Reorder
If you ordered from us in Spring 2025, you likely have our 12x24" trays. To keep using those same trays, you’ll want to stick with the 50 Cell Paper Pots (12x24").
Not Sure Which Tray You Have?
It’s easy to check! Just grab a tape measure:
- Standard 1020 Trays: If it’s roughly 10x20", go with the 55 Cell Paper Pots(10x20").
- Nursery Trays: If it measures 12x24", the 50 Cell Paper Pots(12x24") are your best bet.
Will My Clips Work for Both Sizes?
Yes! The Paper Pot Opening Clips are universal. Once you’ve stretched your pots and filled them with damp soil, they’ll hold their shape on their own. You can then pop the clips off and use them for your next tray.
